Borough, Bourg or in other words and languages known as Borgo, Burgz, Burg, etc. is a fortified Medieval architectural complex with special characteristics. Bourg is usually mistaken with castles.

Bourg Medved known also as Medvedgrad is the perfect Bourg with all architectural characteristics one should have.

This Medieval fortified building complex is made for living and defense. Situated on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain, overwatches Croatian capital city, Zagreb. On demand of Catholic priests, it was built between 1249 – 1254. The primal function is to protect the city ( mostly themselves).

During the time Medved owners and inhabitants were all kinds of notable figures from the Catholic Church as well as Hungarian and Croatian nobility.

The last owners of the Bourg were Gregoryanetz family in the 16th century. An earthquake heavily damaged the Bourg Medved after that.

There are many legends and stories about Medved’s inhabitants. Certainly the most intriguing are the stories about Black Queen; Barbara Celjska – extremely beautiful, evil and promiscuous
